VALPARAISO GENERAL INFORMATION
Valparaiso is a major port in Chile. It is 120 km West of the capital, Santiago de Chile.
The port city Valparaiso has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO,and is home to a bohemiam artistic scene.This blue collar city is full of colorful clapboard houses and Victorian mansions built on a circle of steep hills.
Valparaiso has many things to offer the tourist, including great shopping, fine dining, theatre, museums, orchestral and band performances, festivals, and sports events. Almost everything is within walking distance, and Valparaiso is located less than two hours from Santiago downtown. Valparaiso is also well known for its raucous nightlife, as sailors' bars and bordellos line the winding, hilly streets.
POPULATION
There are 300,000 people in Valparaiso. There are another 345,000 in neighboring Viña del Mar. The Chileans are almost all mestizo, or mixed race.
PORT
Muelle Prat is Valparaiso's passenger pier. A huge breakwater forms Valparaiso's deep-water harbor, home to the Chilean Navy. The first pier built in all of Chile was constructed here in Valparaiso.
CLIMATE
Temperate. It's dry in summer with temperatures ranging from morning lows in the 50s to afternoon highs in the mid-70s. Mellow breezes blow in off the ocean.
LANGUAGE
Spanish is the official language of Chile, although many of the tourist officials speak English or French.
CURRENCY
Chilean peso.
